Apostrophes and other blogger vagaries

There seems to be a glitch somewhere. I type up most of my blog posts in word and use the blogger tool to upload straight from there, generally if there are no pictures in my post and if I am writing a longer muse. Now my punctuation is being scrambled during the 'beam me up' process. So please don't send me a copy of Eats, Shoots & Leaves for Xmas anyone, it's not my fault. Honest!

Word is probably converting your apostrophes into 'smart' quotes, with a curly appearance, which are not part of the more basic HTML character set. If you type directly online (or in a comments box, apostrophes are more like very short vertical lines.

If I'm writing something long, I use the Mac equivalent of NotePad. It's simpler and you don't need any of Word's fancy formatting. If NotePad doesn't have a dictionary, you could also try turning off 'smart quotes' in Word's preferences. The commands, in the Mac version, are in the AutoCorrect options:

1. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect, and then click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
2. Under Replace as you type, select or clear the "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes" check box.
